CMP3 – Task 6

Windows Wallpaper

Cut Up:

Reflection:

The focus for task 5 was mainly around ‘Cut-up’ photography and use of stock images. In preparation for this, we completed a preliminary task on looking at images as a form of data, using Photoshop to collate and stack images together. We then conducted the process of data averaging, changing the variables like the ‘mean’ to produce an array of visually different images. Using the work from this process, we started the ‘Cut-up’ task where we were tasked with creating an imaginary scene from ‘cuttings’ of other images. Photoshop’s layer facilities made it easy to transition from different areas of the work and the brush and healing brushes were useful in this task, especially when correcting errors.

Evaluation:

The final piece is an adaptation of the Windows XP wallpaper with images inserted across the background. The inserts are not to scale and are relatively random but that was the aesthetic I was hoping to represent; something creative/random. As mentioned previously, the layer and masking tools worked well and photoshop was clearly the best software to use for this task. To improve this piece, I would possibly add more inserts to increase the content and the visual on-screen and if I had more time, smoothing out the edges around the images would improve the aesthetic of the piece and achieve a cleaner appearance in the process.
